I gave my brother an older Craftsman tractor with a vertical shaft 12hp Briggs and Straton that I was given. The tractor was in pieces and when I finally started it smoke like a pig....I was hoping the rings would seal and they haven't. Is this motor rebuildable? I have done other motor rebuilds but never a briggs? Or should I buy new? Any suggestions would be helpful. thanks!

From David A. Sohn 3/21/2000

May I ask-- if the engine was rebuilt with new piston rings already-- has the oil level been over filled? If so could cause a lot of smoke. You want the level right at full mark, not less and not more. Also did you replace the crankcase breather system? If has the old breather, could be letting crankcase pressure build up and cause oil burning. Breathers over 10 years old should be replaced during rebuild. The little plastic parts just do not last beyond that.

I hope this helps some.

Actually I never thought about the breather, in fact I am not even sure where it is, oh wait isn't it related to the valve train inspection cover....Well I guess I will have to go to my brothers house and doing a little maintenance. thanks....p

I would rebuild. If you've done others that Briggs will be a piece of cake. I'd try a set of rings (chrome rings are slightly oversized and often do a good job. Should be about $15 for a set. Some people don't like them, though, thinking they are hard to seat) first. Give the bore a slight honing to clean it up. Maybe lap the valves. These engine do well with a rebuild.

Thanks, I guess if it really is the rings I will follow your advice. Do I have to have the case pressed apart? Also where do I find a flywheel puller for it. I guess I mean do I have to buy one or would a small engines shop rent one out...or is there a neat way to do it.. thanks for all the help.. these boards are GREAT!!!!..p

You can rent a harmonic balancer puller, I have used one on tough flywheels. They work the best and are ment to take the punishment. You can get rent them at a Autozone or Pepboys, if they are in your area.

The case should come apart without any force. The bolts that hold the case together may be unevenly spaced and in odd locations.

You may need to clean up the part of the crankshaft that extends out to the pulleys/blade because that gets rusty and covered with crud. Emery cloth works well for that.

A multiple-spacing gear puller does a good job on the flywheel and is not that expensive. It comes in handy often, once you buy one.

If you don't have a repair manual for this thing, it would be a good investment of only a few $$. In the back of it, you'll find pictures and part #s of special tools used on Briggs engines. The flyweel puller on most Briggs engines is a piece that fits over the end of the crankshaft and has two bolts which thread into the holes in the flywheel that are close to the crankshaft. By tightening the bolts, the flywheel is pulled off. I made one of these tools once out of a piece of 3/4" thick bar stock about 2" wide and 4" long. All I had to do was drill 3 holes and install bolts! Sometimes the holes in the flywheel are not already threaded, but I think that occurs mostly on aluminum flyweels. Good Luck!

Hey thatnks, that puller is EXACTLY what I wanted to know....and hear for that matter. I like it when I can make my own tools. Thanks again...
