Hi there, I bought one of these Case 220 w/kohler241 several years ago. It was burning oil pretty badly at the time. I changed oil etc and used it to move a little grass. After short while engine quit... Disassembly revealed that piston skirt was eroded on one side and failed due to oil starvation. Note: The rest of the engine (bearings etc) were fine -- and the crankcase was full of oil. The "good" side of the piston was oiled by the oil slinger (dipping into crankcase oil -- per design) but the "bad" side of the piston had failed... AS IF IT WAS OIL STARVED. WHY? Here is what I concluded. Apparently Kohler oils 'the dry side of the piston' with oil supplied by a little hole or port -- in the 'dry side of the CYLINDER' (now here comes the tricky part) the source of the oil for that little hole or port -- is the same oil that drains out of (not sure of the right term here) 'the lifter chamber' or 'cam follower gallery' located on side of engine (accessed by removing a metal side cover. Cover size: approx. 3.5" X 5"). Inside that area (behind the lifters) is a square piece of stamped steel. This metal piece looks symetrically rectangular -- except for a tiny hole in center of one long edge -- AND IT WILL FIT IN PLACE EITHER OF TWO WAYS (180 deg. -- with no obvious "TOP" side -- especially if it is covered in black dirty oil!)... but be aware... if you clean this part thoughly and look closely at it -- there is a small stamped lettering (opposite the tiny hole) which says: "TOP" (UNLESS you have the part FLIPPED in which case it will read something like "dOL"!) Apparently the previous mechanic did not clean this part enough to read "TOP" and slapped it back in place 'UPSIDE DOWN' which had the effect of covering the oil drain, which drain provided the oil that flowed down the passage, to the port, which was designed to feed oil to 'the dry side' of the cylinder etc etc etc. I did have this *[10hp KOHLER K241] engine BORED OVERSIZE (and the crank TURNED UNDERSIZE) but I never did anything with it since then... I hope this helps... I wish you the best! -=Matthew=- *(It's on a shelf in the garage... wanna buy it?)
