Thank you for the responses to my question. ALL were helpful (it's amazing how much you thought you knew). One question raised by the responses: Do AG tires w/o chains give more traction than "turf saver" tires w/ chains if neither tire were "loaded"? Thanks again.

Ag tires, or "tractor tires" as they were called, have deep lugs to bite into the ground for traction. They will make ruts if the ground is soft, and will mark up your lawm. Turf saver tires have relatively smooth tread and run at low pressure to give a larger footprint to avoid ruts and give a better looking lawn. You can use chains on turf tires (probably the best solution)but they may chew up your yard. Also use wheel weights. Don't mow when the grass is wet.If your lawn is firm, that is, not soft or muddy, and you have good grass, you will never get good traction. You must mow in a direction that will give you the least slippage. Uphill use a higher gear with a little more speed. Downhill go slower in a lower gear. Keep in mind that if you don't have good traction, your brakes will cause the rear wheels to slide. Just letting up on the gas will cause a slide. Mowing sideways on a hill can also cause you to slide if the hill is steep. If you are only cutting grass, I would look into a machine with a front mounted mower, most of the weight on two large driving wheels and lugged tires. Tractors are cute (I have five) but they are not the most efficient grass cutters.
