Briggs Stratton not charging! HELP

I have a 18hp Briggs & Stratton oil injected engine in my Simplicity garden tractor, and apparently whatever keeps the battery charged up is not working. I have replaced the battery so I know that's not the problem, but everytime I have to start the tractor I either have to charge the battery up, or jump start it. Can anyone tell me what could/is the problem, and about what I am looking at cost wise to fix it. I can do the repairs myself, I just need to know what part/parts I will need to get it fixed. I understand that some engines have a coil system under the flywheel that acts as an alternator, while others use some other king of charging system. I just hate to pay someplace big bucks to make a simple repair that I can do myself!
Thanks
Gary

Yes, I also believe it wold be your coil if you have one. You might be able to contact the dealer you bought it from or look in your manual for the "Armature Air Gap". The armature air gap is the space between the coil and the flywheel which generates electricity. If the gap is too big you wont get spark at all. But, I could be dead wrong I have no experience with large engines only small ones. good luck!

As with previous reply, check the inline diode for the charging circuit.
If that is OK it could be the stator under the flywheel. Good Luck !

These Brigs engines have a, I believe they call it a resistor or diode in the charging circuit. Thsee tend to blow once in a while like a fuse. On my engine it is in the line that runs below the air cleaner. I would suggest you start checking there.
