Sounds like a broken shift lever or shift rail. To determine what is wrong remove the (3) capscrews holding the shift lever on and pull the lever out. If it appears to be broken the "ball" area on the bottom of the shifter will be missing. This does happen. If you are very lucky you may retrieve the brokrn piece out with a magnet. At this point move the shift rails to"Neutral" and purchase a new shifter or reweld the old one to repair.
If you are unsure or unable to do this yourself it would be wise to seek a dealer's help.
