I own a 1978 JD 316 . great tractor ! full
hydrolics( have a power lift and angle 54in plow) Its built like a tank, I bought it as a $400 basket case . I ended up having to get a new kohler short block ($800) and a couple of other things, but for a total of @ $1500 ,you couldn"t buy anything new built like it for $8000 . I understand some years latter they made a 316 with a onan engine (not sure what year your looking at. there are still plenty of parts available so don't let the age of the tractor discourage you . E-mail me if you need help , I have the 300 series shop manual. good luck!

Yes there was a 316 made in the first to the middle of the 1970's. I don't know how long they made the tractor. I have the sell lit. on the series of tractors that were sold in about 1975-76. The 316 is in it. Nice tractor. Does this tracor you are looking at have a Kohler in it? I bought a 214 about the same age you are looking at with a rototiller. Mine was in good shape, had a new short block, but the owner couldn't get it to run right. Turned out they put a new carb on the tractor and the thing was falty. If I were you I would buy the tractor. You can do a lot of work on one for what a new one cost. And of couse it is a JD.
