I have a MF 16 that was my grandmas tractor. When she passed I brought it home and starting repairing it, Its had a rough few years. I fixed the mower deck and the leaf vacuum unit for it and got it running. After a few hours of using it(actually my brother borrowed it so I don't know all) it started backfiring loudly and shaking violently. It will only run if at full throttle. If I pull the govenor line back to idle it will idle smooth, ruling out a valve to me(The throttle needs to be replaced so it is always at high idle, when the motor was replaced they did not ground it and so it welded the throttle cable together trying to ground, mean while THEY replaced several cables, DUH! they should have know after the first one). I replaced the spark plug to no avail. The motor was replaced about 5 years ago but has only a couple of years of use on it. I have not touched it since fall and where do you think I should start? Thanks.

If all else fails check the flyheel key, any number of things can cause it to shear and throw the timing off.

I agree with M.Blais...good test of points is to see if you can wiggle the free point arm side to side much on the shaft. In other words, can you move the free point much off center from the fixed one? If you can, then the pivot is worn. That changes the "dwell" angle of the points as engine runs and makes it backfire.

Check your ignition. The points probably have to be replaced.
