I have a 1962 "Original Cub Cadet". I know it is not charging because it dies when it does not have the battery connected. This system is a standard 12 Volt. How do I check the generator and or regulator. Can I put a tester right on the post of the generator and expect a reading? where do I test the regulator, I have never understood which terminal is what. BTW it is a starter generator. Thanks

In most cases the battery "floats" in parallel with the charging
system. Once running and charging, the battery can be disconncted.
If you separate the charging circuit from the ingition lead to the
switch, there is no power to the coil and the engine dies. The most
reliable check is with a volt/ohm meter. Read the voltage accross
the battery terminals, record it and start the engine. The voltage
should now rise but should not exceed 14.5 - 14.7 volts.

Why do you think the machine would keep running if you disconnect the battery cable? That's like turning off a light switch and saying the light should stay on!

How old is your battery? Hang a battery charger on it. If the battery takes a charge and starts the machine but goes dead while the engine is running you can be almost certain the charging system is faulty.

I would follow this procedure before investing any time or money in parts for the charging system.
