Craftsman steering problem

No it's not the driver problem but rather the gear setup on my older model Craftsman lawn tractor. The steering is performed through a curved rack and pinoin affair. This is forever "popping" when you try to make a turn and when observed closley it looks like it is a design fault from the start. Is there a retrofit to something a little more reliable? Where can it be found? Thanks

sounds like the the curved rack and pinion have slipped apart and is binding. there should be an adjustment to fix the problem probably need to pull the steering wheel. and right below the steerin wheel there is a set screw thet will release the whole steering column move this whichever direction is necessary to make the rack and pinion mesh closer together. i believe that the two are not meshing together and as you turn the wheels the two bind up and is causing your popping sound.

the "popping" you hear can be fixed by replacing you're bushings, i have to replace mine about every two years, if they have never been replaced you will probably want to replace the whole steering setup because more than likely the metal is now egg-shaped, its not very hard or expensive excpet for the front axle which is about 100$ just look in the steering section in your manual and order all the steering part, you probably shouldn't have to have the spindles, just the bushings, but when you replace it evrything should be fairly tight (the steering) and the next time the steering starts to get loose just replace the bushings. This should solve you're problem, if you have any ?s email me
