Death Rattle? It appears not. Just poor workmanship

A week or so ago, I was mowing with my 1995 Craftsman lawn tractor with 15 HP B&S engine (Model 28N707). I heard what I thought sounded like a rod knocking, so I shut it down, checked the oil and I was down a quart (holds 1.5 qt). Hmmm, I thought, my Briggs is toast. So I started pricing replacements, $600 was about the best I could do, and I'm not willing to part with that kind of cash without a fight, so I decide to at least open the engine up. Well, I think I see the problem. There are 10 bolts holding the crankcase together, one was missing, one had no threads engaged, two were turned out at least two threads, and two were just finger tight. The danged thing was held together with only 4 of the 10 bolts! It has run very well for 5 years. I have always been leary of B&S in the past, but this experience tells me that the design is sound, but they have (well, had) some pretty darn poor assembly workers. I will be tearing it down and checking the internals (and all bolts) this weekend, but it's starting to look like I might get out of this for the price of a gasket set.

Briggs had a problem with that one year, some loosened right away and some have lasted a bit longer. I don't have the bulletin in front of me, but a trip to your local dealer should get it for you. The fix is a specific tightening sequence to a torque greater than in the manual (pretty tight, I'll look tomorrow). The problem was only in the sump, I bet a gasket and a new crank seal will fix it.

You might want to consider some loctite or something similar on those bolts when you put it all back together. Good luck!

If you use Locktite, be sure you use the soft-set type and not the hard-set. Use the hard-set and you'll never get it apart again.

If it was me, I'd check the lock washers real good, and then use a torque wrench to tighten to specs.
