I have a craftsman 1996 12.5 hp 42'cut 6 speed transaxle .Last spring the transaxle went out so I called sears and orderd another on for it .only to find out when I went to pick it up it was a rebuild.and had a 90 day warenty.ok no lawntractor ? or $340.00 so yes I paid thought it would be just fine. only to make it till now and yes again it is out. I cant see paying that kind of money again Can someone help find a way to fix this problem? posible a used transaxle or some other idea would be nice .

I have a similar delima (see below posts), and have came to the conclusion that to keep a reliable riding mower (not a tractor, a lawn mower), you have to do one of the following:

1. Lay out $5 to $7k for a Deere, Cub, Kubota, etc. Lasts for 20 years.

2. Get a Roper (yours was made by Roper) or an MTD every 3 to 5 years new.

I have found that even assuming no value after 3 years, it is still more ecnonmical to pursue option #2.

If I were you, I'd go to the local "Wally Mart" or Home Depot and get a Murray, Rally, Weed Eater, etc. All of these are almost identical to your Craftsman (all made by Roper), except for paint, stickers, and hood. I have seen 12.5 hp units on sale for $699. I would NEVER spend over $200 on fixing one.

Just my opinion.

I've got a 1971 Sears (Roper) that still does well, and I've spent very little money on it for the past 33 yrs. Every body can't pull out 5 to 7 thousand for a mower. And for the units like Wallmart, Lowes and Homedepot sell are mass produced units and are not worth hauling home.

Check the housing on the transaxle for a small tag that has the transaxle model information on it. With that nearly any small engine repair shop can order you a new unit. Sears doesn't make their own units, I've seen the small engine shops undersell Sears before. Most manufactures only offer a 90 day parts warrenty on new parts.

With that ID number a shop should be able to order only the needed parts. I don't know whether that's a peerless transaxle or not,but service parts should be the way to save money.
If you have a hydro, then an exchange may be best. See an independent lawn & garden repair shop to find the best price.

I won't disagree, I'm just in the habit of offering that choice first. Some of these are down to the $125 range, and if someones paying me to do it, sometimes they are better off (labor wise) to just pop a new one in and get one thats new and factory assembled.

slowly take the peerless rear-end apart,,,and remove the ring and pinion,,,9 times out of 10 thats all thats wrong,,,,sears has the parts for about $15.00,,,,try it,,,,then fill it up with a thin grease and put it back together...,,let me know what happens,,,and good luck
