I have a new Sears 14.5 hp 42" cut lawn tractor. I replaced the blades last night. I didn't check to see if the new blades went on in the exact same position as the old ones. How important is this and if it is important what is the correct clock position of the blades?

Not important at all. The slipping of the belts when you engage the PTO will ensure that they are randomly oriented with respect to the other. The star shape is just to provide positive drive, much like the two pins used on the smaller push mower blades.
