I just bought a 1970 case 444 garden tractor and seem to have a problem with the hydrualic drive . You cant't control the tractor speed with the control lever in forward , it's either all or nothing and you have no braking/holding action when in neutral . iIn revers you can control speed but still no braking action from the hydrualic drive . It doesn't appear to have a slipping problem ( I can bury it forward or backward without stalling the drive unit ). Any ideas ?

Did you check the drive linkage at the control valve? These universals sometimes come loose. The hydraulic lock valve located on the drive motor could be in need of an overhaul with new seals also. Or the worst case would be that the drive motor has finally wore out. And remember, these units like new 20w40 oil in the hydraulics each year. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply , what has me confused is that I have braking in reverse but not in foreward . I'm wondering if the valve is assembled wrong or has the control valve for the 3 point / deck hieght adjustment installed instead ( if you try to do slow or fine adjustments it will move up slightly before going down ) I have all the owners & repair manuals for it, including the front loader . If you need any copies contact me . You also answered my next question about the oil weight & type ! Thanks, Lee
