Engine problem.. clicking.. piston??

My 10hp B&S horizontal lawn tractor engine is making a fairly loud clicking sound that varies in speed with the engine rpm. With a mechanics stethascope I was able to hear it most clearly by touching the top of the engine near the spark plug. Anybody happen to know what might be causing this? The mower also seems to burn a great deal of oil. My other mower croaked recently, and I can't afford to kill this one as well. Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Darren McLaughlin

Could be a carbon buildup on top of your piston....

how would that tick? increase compression causing a ping? I am interested in that theory, please explain.

If enough carbon gets on top of your piston....
There is only so much room between piston and head...

so does it contact the head, or does it decrease the size of the combustion chamber so as to raise the compression ratio and then creating a ping? I just would like to understand your point since it not something I have run into.

I have had old engines that part of the carbon broke loose and got on top of other carbon allready on the piston and tap the head makeing pinging noises... That old carbon can really pack hard enought to mess up a good head or strip a head bolt or concave a piston top....

sounds like a valve tap. These motors have a solid valve train and therefore are not adjustable. Pull the valve inspection cover and check the gap per the manual. IF the gap is too large it will tap, too small and it will hang a valve open and the result is no compression. If the engine is burning oil then the valves guides are probably shot which alone could cause a clicking sound. If it is either of these problems then a rebuild is in order, but it can be ran with them bad. I you do run it like this don't be surprised if the motor is totally shot when it doesn't run anymore...
