Is the spark plug wet with gas, or is it just in the carb?

First, be sure points are at .020 so that the spark is coming at the right time. Spark should be blue in color at plug tip when testing. Yellow spark indicates bad points and/or bad wire connections.

Then take plug out, put thumb over hole, pull it. If thumb "poofs" off hole, it has compression, but may have low compression due to leaky head gasket. If no "poof," blown head gasket and/or valve is stuck, could possibly be a hole in piston.

Compression test for All briggs, Take engine turn it by hand find the compression stroke , By pass it thru compression stroke , give it a whip counter clockwise if the engine rebounds from hitting compression , then it most likley has well enough compression to run
