I have a 12 HP Briggs engine that the governor sticks in wide open postion when it is started. It doesn't do this every time, but is getting more frequent. What needs to be done to remedy this ?
Also, when engine is shut down it will backfire. What is the cause (causes) for this ? (this is a seperate problem than the governor problem)

Did you ever get this sticking governor resolved? I have a 5hp Briggs Stratton engine that does the race on startup sometimes AND have the occasional backfire on shut down. I too am worried that the engine will blow when it races.

The govenor and the backfiring most likely stem from the same problem shuting the engine off to quickly after high rpm use. When you get ready to stop the engine let idle for 20 seconds or so before shutting it off.

I just got a Craftsman with 12.5 Briggs and Stratton. It starts fine, you can adjust the speed up and down with no problem. Then after a few minutes or perhaps when you stop the mower deck it starts running at full speed. The engine will not respond to the throttle. You can move it all the way up and choke it off to stop. But I know that is not good and I don't want parts of the engine flying out. Any suggestions on where to start would be appreciated.

My guess is that your motor is running a bit on the lean side and that is what is causing it to backfire. try adjusting the carb to richen it up a bit and see if that helps. Also are the cooling fins clean of debris. Use an air hose and even water and degreaser, on cool engine, if you have to. remove cylinder covers if you have to. (NOT THE HEAD, JUST THE SHIELDS)

As for the govenor, are you sure the linkage is clean and free. use a little carb cleaner on the linkage to remove any buildups to make sure. Also use the carb cleaner to clean the carb. When the motor is off the govenor is wide open and something is sticking and causing it to remain there. I would doubt that it is internal but it is possible. Clean the whole motor if it is dirty, A clean motor is cooler...

If its running lean....You might think the govenor sticking...When an engine is starving for gas it will run faster....

Is the choke separate from the Throttle,If not whene you have the throttle up @ Choke position it has the govenor held at full throttle, till you lower it fast it does race, For the Shutdown backfire Before shutting down the engine, Throttle down to idle let the engine idle for least 1 minute this lets the engine cool down gradualy and drop's the exhaust temps drasticaly, Why they back fire @ shut down is Take a hot engine and just kill it @ anything besides idle and not idlling enuff, Like say ive seen people leave the thing at wide open throttle and shut it down, All that is doing is dumping raw gas into the cylinder number one wiping oil off the cylinder and number 2 dumping raw gas into the hot muffler and in turn it will explode causing the back fire.

Disconnected the choke and it still does it. Sometimes it starts OK and other times it runs wide open and has to be shutdown before something blows.
