I have a 10hp B&S horizontal engine on a riding mower. When I bought it used, there was a clicking sound that could be heard when the engine was running and varied with engine speed. The clicking sound has recently gotten louder, and has been accompanied by a drastic increase in oil usage. I also noticed that when the engine is off and the spark plug removed, I can turn the pulley, and every 1 and a half to 2 turns I can hear something hitting metal inside the engine. Any theories what this might be? Carbon buildup, and valve problems have been suggested, and I thought perhaps the extra detail would help narrow it down.

Thanks,

Darren

Pull the head and scrape the carbon off of the
head and top off the cylinder and reinstall with
the old gasket, first, and see if it cures the problem. If the noise was from elsewhere, then the engine would not run long. Save yourself
some money and try this first. Fish

sounds to me that you have a valve problem for sure. I would take the cover off of the inspection plate for the valves and see if they are sticking. You may be hearing the valve hang open for a second and then snapping closed. That or the cam is wore a bit and the lash is out of spec. and there is too much now. That would cause the click. I believe it is a valve because it does not do it on every stroke. If every stroke it made a sound, then I'd say it was piston related, but the valves are the only thing that alternate revolutions like that. let me know how it goes.
