Cub Cadet 582

Can anyone explain the belt tension setup on the front of the 582. I just purchased one made by IH. It has a lever on the left side that has notches in it. It doesn’t seem that the notches are to hold the tension. Just a guide to know if it is set correctly. There is also a diagram on the front but really doesn’t make any sense. It appears that tension on the 582 is held by just the one bolt on the oppostie pulley of this lever. I also own a 127 that uses the two bolts to adjust tension. Any help appreciated. David

you adjust the bolt so that the two notches are between the frame. just like you siad there a guide the digran tries to show how to set it up. your 127 someone has add a 2nd bolt it use to be a spring on it with one adjustment the spring on the 127 may have broken and that was a quick fix for someone.

Mark, so the two notches should be between the frame when there is no pressure put onto the lever? Meaning pushing into it. Right now I can push the lever in towards the tractor to the point where the second notch lines up with the deck frame. That’s about as far as I can push it with the tension from the belt. It does fall between those marks though. It just seems that there is alot of belt movement when the deck is engaged. Maybe I need a new belt?What is the notch closest to the end of the lever. It is much deeper than the other two. Almost as if you can push it to a point in which it will lock the lever against the deck? Also, Does that lever just hang in the breeze. When the deck is engaged I get a bell ringing sound from it hitting the metal around it. Is it supposed to lock in some fashion? Maybe it’s time to hunt down a manual for the 582. As far as the 127, both sides have the bolt connected to pulleys. It looks factory to me. I just adjust both of them equally to bring up the tension. David

The deep notch is only there to hold the idler arm in the "relaxed" position to service the deck. You should view the shallow notches to determine belt tension. If it between the two,you are fine. It should be there without touching it,just view it "as-is". If it extends out past the second notch,all you need to do is adjust belt tension by turning the adjusting nut on the OTHER idler arm. Start the deck and shut it off to check the new setting,readjust as needed.
