7 hp kohler wont stay running

This engine is on a 1961 Cub Cadet. It will start every time, (electric start), but wont stay running for long. It just seems to cut out and die. The throttle cable where it attaches to the governor is loose and when I mess with it, it will stay running longer, or will not start until I find the original position I have it in now. Any suggestions as to what I need to do? This has an oil bath air cleaner on it, but don't know if this has anything to do with my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

After removing the spark plug, checking to see if it is carboned up, and cranking the engine to test for a strong, blue spark at the plug, try these:

1.) Remove the bottom section of the oil bath air filter. This is the same as taking out the filter all together. Try it; if it still does it, then it is not the air filter.

2.) Check the fuel flow to the carb by removing the gas line at the carb and seeing how well gas runs out of it. If it dribbles out or barely trickles, clean the line, the sediment bowl (replace gasket) and check the tank for foreign matter. Be sure the shutoff valve is blown out with air and does not have a blockage. Check the gas cap for a blocked vent.

3.) If it still does it after 1 and 2, remove the air cleaner from carb body entirely and dribble some gas into the carb. Try it; does it run better, or will the combination of dribbled gas and choking make it run better? If so, then remove the carb and get a kit to rebuild it. You will see if the carb is your problem when you open it up, because it will have junk in the bowl and maybe some water, too. Clean it thoroughly with carb cleaner, making sure the small passages in the main jet needle are clean.

If you still have problems or if the spark was yellow or weak-looking with no snap to it, start by cleaning every ignition connection. Replace the points and condensor and time it to .020 with a feeler gauge.

If you do all this, you will have performed a major tune-up, and it should run like a top.

Good luck. Email me if you have more questions.

I'll second all of Jim's recommendations. What's the recent history - how long has this tractor been sitting? You might have some stale fuel in there causing problems. When I come home with a "new to me" unit I usually figure on at least a thorough cleaning of the entire fuel system, and usually a carb. kit, along with an oil change, new filters, plug, and points and cond. All this stuff is pretty easy to take care of on your engine.

You should also check for excessive looseness in the throttle valve shaft in the carb. Play here will allow excessive un-metered air in and will cause difficult and erratic idling. Have fun! Ed.

Thanks for also answering. I removed the nut at the bottom of the carb and cleaned around the float. Now it starts easily and stays running. The next problem is to understand the connection at the end of the gas throttle to the little wheel with holes in it, and the brass nut the seems to "adjust" itself while running. It will go from idle to full power without me touching the throttle lever. This also is attached to the governor. When I pull the governor rod back towards me and hold it, it will stay idling until I let go. Any more advice you can pass on to this novice??

Sounds like your idle set screw needs screwed in a turn or two...Thats the screw that keeps the linkage from closing all the way.....

I'll take a look at the screw, but think that the problem is before that. I need to know why the brass nut keeps turning (vibrating) loose, and why this causes the engine to rev up on it's own.

Adjusting the screw did not solve the problem. Wondering if I need to put a lock washer behind the brass nut to keep it from turning. I've ordered the engine manual, and maybe I will find the problem after viewing that.
