317 with bad motor????

I have a 317 the motor is a kt17 series 1,its running realy ruff and backfires alot under load? the compression is 80&90,do I try and rebuild or just buy new???thanks again mike

Neither i would 1st look into adjusting the carb for starters, Running rough is Most likley one sign of running to Rich of a fuel mixture, get it started and let the engine warm up for 5 minutes, Take the throttle up to max speed turn gently the main jet adjusting screw in till engine starts to die out do to to lean mix and turn a 1/2 - full turn out may need little more, Do Not over tighten the needle Valve it will be Damaged by turning to tight, If this does not correct the problem it may need a good Carb cleaning and or overhaul,the carb
