Had to work on the valves in this engine and am about ready to reassemble. Would appreciate an answer as to how tight the head bolts should be using a torque wrench.

if You set speed control to run engine doesn't respond it just idles a little faster ,when You put blade and transmissio in gear it just speeds up a little.I can push the lever from the governor spring to governor and engine will accelerate. This engine is on a Murray 38" mower. Thanks Dave Beck

Charles
According to the Massey Ferguson service manual
for the MF-12, the cylinder head bolt should be
torqued to 200 inch-pounds and in this pattern. 6----- ----2----- -----9 3----- ----- ----- ---- 4----- ----- ----- ----7 ----- -----x----- ----- 5----- ----1----- -----8

x = spark plug. Pay attention to proper length
/location. The book also says to retorque hot.
Best of luck, Pat from Alaska.

Hey Pat from Alaska,

Thanks for the reply. Can I assume that if I'M using a foot-pound wrench instead of inch-pounds it would convert to 16.66 foot-pounds? When you said pay attention to proper length/location I assume you mean head bolt length. I notice two or the nine are shorter than the other seven.
Again, thanks much for your help!
Charlie from Franklin County, Virginia
