I have a Ford YT16 with the manual belt-driven tranny. The transmission case has cracked and this is the 3rd one. Is there any option that would substitute another transmission ?? This case is cheap thin aluminum.

Arne, that is such a common problem on these models. Has your transaxle been replaced or rebuilt when this happens?? If replaced the dealer should call Peerless (the mfr.) to find out if any replacement is more suitable. Some of the replacements are somewhat stronger.
The issue here is it's intended use. The tractor is a LAWN tractor and isn't designed for heavy drawbar loads. Also,it does not like to be shifted "on-the-fly" through the gears, even though it has been advertised as such. This is particularly true while driving uphill or when a load is on the tranny. That seems to result in premature failure so often. It might be worth the effort for you to contact the transaxle mfr. directly and talk to someone in their service dept. You can find them by searching the web for Tecumseh Products Co. which will take you to their site. Click on the powertrain/transmission section. If necessary, call the engineering dept. at (920) 898-5711 and ask to be transferred to service.
I hope they can help you with this obvious failure of their design.

Arne,

I have the same problem with the transaxle in my yt-16. It was broke (housing split & whole 9 yards) just before I bought it. The previous owner (my father) was told (by the dealer) that it is "just a limitation of that model's rearend". I have since broke it again (miss-shift uphill). I'll give the web site or phone # a try and see what they say. I wonder why the dealer wasn't knowlegable enough to suggest the same thing? Anyway, thanks for the info and wish me luck.

Thanks,

Kent

I may have a fix. I bought a transaxle from a Craftsman mower that was similar at a junk yard.
All I can find on it is that it is a Foote brand
but I can't find a serial number anywhere on it. The axles from the peerless fit with a little encouragement, and the linkage needs to modified a little. Have to make one bracket and modify the other one. Otherwise bolts right on. I should finish this project soon and have more info on how well it works. I heard that the main drive gear will break a tooth and gets stuck
binding the gears and in reaction busting the case. I noticed that the main gear in this Craftsman one is twice as wide, and the teeth look a lot stronger. Should work well.
