I have just purchased a case 644 garden tractor size loader. I believe it was manufactured in the late 60's or early 70's. The engine is a large single cylider Kohler. The hyd.pump is weak, but on the whole it appears to be a very capable little machine. Can anyone help me find information on this tractor/loader? Are parts and manuals available? I know that Ingersoll purchased this product line and makes a similar tractor.

Hi Paul;
I also have a Case 644 Loader, have had it about 10 years or so, Have done a lot of work with it, like cleaning horse stalls and moveing gravel and sawdust, it will pickup about 800 pounds if you keep the front tires inflated with about 50lb of air.
The Engine is a 14 HP Kohler.

Thanks for the info. The Case filter should do the trick.

Before you go replacing the Hydraulic pump, you may want to change the hydraulic oil. It sounds dumb but the oil breaks down after six months and things start feeling mushy, even when hooking up a flow meter. I change the oil on my 446 once a year and I'm still amazed with the difference in performance after the change. If that doesn't cure it, then check the releif valve for the travel section, its just a small steel ball and spring, for the spring could have broken. Another item could be the o-ring on the power beyond fitting which would result in slow loader operation but fair travel operation. Most of the parts from the new Ingersoll should fit for the only difference in most of the garden tractor line was engines, control valves (600 series had a type of its own), hydraulic pump(again the 600 only), and the hydraulic coolers. Hope this helps.

Thanks Max, I have the opposite problem. The loader appears to work OK, although I haven't tried to lift anything too heavy yet. The travel is very weak. I have taken the pump apart and found groves in the aluminum housing and evidence that the fluid by-passes the gears. I found a replacement pump (new, exact replacement) at less than half the price that Ingersoll wanted for a pump that required changes in coupler and fittings. Still looking for manuals or other information. Do you happen to know how large the engine is likely to be? The only markings I have found are the Kohler name. While waiting for my new pump, I am going to fabricate a new exhaust and try to quit it down a bit.

I have the Case 644 circa 1977. The engine is a 14 horse Kohler Model K321A Spec. 60258. I have many manuals in a binder for individual subsystems on the tractor but not really one that covers repair and maintenence specifications for the whole tractor. It especially seems to fall short of information on the chassis. If anyone has questions I'll try my best.

Its a 14 hp and I think it was a K341 or something like that. I know that it had a special short block that was only available through Case. When I was at a Case Company store many years ago we tried to get the engine at an authorized Kohler dealer but found out the difference would require modifications. I think the differences may have been the crank and the bolt pattern on the block for the pump bracket.

Parts are available from Ingersoll dealers though some may take some time. Try the dealer locator at their web site below.
