I was reading on the discussion forum that the series 1 Kolher 17HP was not a good engine. I have a JD 214 with a Kohler engine and was wondering if I should not consider rebuilding it because of the oiling problums that the series 1 suffered from ? The engine # is ( K321AQS ). Any addtional info on this engine would be helpful, thanks.

Adam, don't worry! The series 1/series 2 discussion ONLY pertains to the KT series twin cylinder engines, not to any single cylinder Kohlers. Those K-series singles are tough as nails. All you need to do is overhaul them when oil control becomes serious. Be sure to grind the crankshaft .010 under as well. It'll last another 25 years.
The KT17,-19 etc. were built with two oiling systems. The series 2 were much improved and I have over 4000 actual hours on one;never apart!!
Few of the first series are still in use.
