I just bought a Cub Cadet Hydro 1720 at an auction. I didn't give much for the tractor, so figure I can spend a little money on it if I need to. Does anybody know if the 1720 had the Series I Kohler 17 hp engine or the better Series II? The Model number on the Kohler Magnum 17 engine is MV185.After mowing for 20-30 minutes, the engine will lose power. The plugs will be fouled and there is quite a bit of oil in the air cleaner. The filter will be soaked with oil. Any suggestions? My Case-IH mechanic says it can't be anything serious - that it is in the carburation. Thanks in advance for any help.

The magnum series was an improved version of the kt series. Basically the same as the series II except the magnums had electronic ignition. Is your oil level going up, or does the oil seem thin? These tractors had some problems with the float valve in the carb sticking and filling the crankcase with gas.
They originally didn't come with a fuel filter and this allowed dirt to get in the needle valve and hold it open. Part of the gas tank is higher than the carb, so if the tank is full, it can flood the crankcase. The ones that did have a filter, had it between the tank and the fuel pump.
I have seen them get water in the fuel, the water gets to the pump, and rusts the diaphragm plate and the rust holds the needle valve open. If the oil level is ok, you either have a bad crankcase breather, or is is getting too much blowby which means it is due for a ring job.

Thanks for the reply. The oil level does not come up at all, in fact it goes down considerably. I don't think there is any gas getting into the crankcase through the carb. I also don't think that there is that much blow by either. I had the compression checked and it seems to be good. I think the first thing to check will be the crankcase breather. A small engine mechanic told me that there is a valve where the breather tube connects to the crankcase. If it sticks open, the carb will suck oil through the tube and into the carb. This sounds like a good possibility in my case.
