Stopped and looked over a Case 446 with 48" deck and 3 point hitch that one of my neighbors is selling. He's asking $2500 with rebuilt motor amd deck bearings. Is this a far price? Also, any idea what years these things were made, and what HP it is? Thinking about a tractor for garden and yard work (possibly putting a loader on), more than for mowing.

They were started early 70's and the color was Power Red with Desert Sand color hood and fenders. The horsepower was 16 and they were only available with the Onan B43M/GAO16. The early models had two mufflers that were outside the hood. In 1978 they changed the color to all Power Red and placed one muffler under the hood in place of where the early models had the hyd tank. The units of choice(my personal choice) were the ones built after 1980. These had the wheelbase extended to 48" from the previous 46" and had an increase in hyd capacity. The later versions(after 1980) can power the log splitter that splits wood both ways. Todays hyd implements, tiller, splitter, and mower still work on them even though it has an Ingersoll tag, same basic design, different owners. I wouldn't put a loader on one though for like most other garden tractors, the front wheel bearings won't survive. Try looking for either a 644, 646, or 648 which have heavy duty front wheels and are made with the loader frame. Check out the Ingersoll website for more info. Link
