Briggs engines seize in cold weather

My Craftsman lawn tractor has a 16hp Briggs OHV engine. Last winter I hooked up my snowblower attachment. Two engines seized within 15 minutes (Sears replaced them both under warranty). Now I'm afraid the same thing will happen this season. I was using 5-30W oil. The temperature was about 15 degrees F. Not really a heavy load. the engines both started to falter about 45 seconds before they seized.

Any ideas? I really don't want this to happen again this season. The engine runs great during the summer - I use it every week. Last winter was the first time I tried using the blower.

I'm not familiar with your situation or circumstances, but I would collect your model/serial/type #/code, etc. and call around to area small engine shops to see what they say. If there was a design flaw with the engine Sears would have pulled it, or at minimum issued a warning that the tractor wasn't to be used in cold weather. Contact Briggs directly through their website.

Anyone could recieve a lemon, but two? sounds a little odd, doesn't it? I have never been a fan of vertical shaft engines in Garden tractors...too many are made light and cheap, but the bad thing is that everybody is going that way in order to be competitive.

Re: Onan 16HP Twin running on High Octane - Is this bad?? in reply to Hans, 05-20-2002 21:10:16
Hans,

I have a Kohler 20 horse. I have used super unleaded in it for years, no problem.

If I used unlead or super there is no increase in RPM, you may have another problem.

Suggest you check RPM at full per manual specs.
