Briggs Dual Circuit alternator question

Subject: Roper tractor with a 13HP Briggs and Stratton, "DUAL CIRCUIT EQUIPPED", meaning it has an AC output to run the headlights and a DC output to charge the battery. According to Paul Dempsey's book, the dual circuit alternator should have a rectifier mounted under the fan shroud, which creates the DC current for the charging circuit, and there is a 4-pin connector between the alternator coils and the fuse holder. Well, I don't see any rectifier! The big wire (red lead) comes from the alternator coils and goes straight to the fuse holder on the fan shroud. There's a bracket inside the shroud, next to the fuse holder, that looks like something that would hold the 4-pin connector he shows in his book, but there is nothing in the bracket. Yet everything looks like factory assembly and I'm pretty sure it has never been taken apart before. And I haven't found an external rectifier. What gives here? I'd really like to know it was going to work before putting the engine all back together again.

The single diode gives you halfwave Dc...Not very good ...But it will keep your battery charged...Batterys don't last as long when charged with them....
The tractor with a bridge rectifer has four diodes in a block to make full wave Dc power...Much better on the battery..

you can either have the rectifier setup or simply the diode setup..both setups are shown in briggs service manuals and do basically the same thing....however most premium tractors with accessories w/more loads tend to use the rectifier..doth diode and rectifier convert the alternating current to dc current...don

I found the diode! It was disguised as a fuse holder on the fan shroud. Or, I should say, B&S used a standard fuse holder to create the spring contact to the extension wiring leading from the engine, and instead of putting a fuse in it, they put the diode in there. I checked it and the alternator coils out with my ohmeter, and all is well. Thanks for the help, Don.
