I just got an AC Big Ten with a 10 hp Briggs. My Uncle figured out you can't run them on a hill. It broke the rod and I'm afraid it may have ruined the crank. Anyone know where to get a rebuild kit with rod and/or crank? I've got a lot of attachments I just need the engine. Model # 243431, type 0123 02, code 658131.

I am going through a rebuild on my Gilson Tractors B&S Motor. Same problem, the previous owner ran it low on oil,and was mowing a hillside when it "stopped". It is a 1969 12hp motor. The rod was in 3 big pieces, and alot of smaller ones. The piston has a chunk out of it when the rod blew. The crankpin looks really bad from the rod material deposited on it. Other than that, it's in good shape. I thought I would have a problem finding parts because of the age of the motor, but all of the parts are available. I needed an undersized rod, and found they still make one. A web phonebook search of "crankshaft" gave me 3 shops in my area (Portland, OR) that deals in regrinding cranks. So for $30 in a fixed up crank, a new piston, rod, gaskets, carb kit, etc., I'm in business.

Check out the B&S web site. In the manuals section they have the complete parts diagrams for their motors online in .pdf files. (well, my 1969 was in there). You should find yours as well. This will give you the B&S part numbers. Then, go to jackssmallengines.com. They have an online search using the B&S part numbers. I found every part I was looking for and could order them right there online, including valve collars to replace the one I launched across the garage. They also have a good article on engine rebuilding online. You don't have to order your parts from them, but I found it very easy. Your local B&S dealer should be able to get you the parts you need.

Bottom line, not to worry. Everything you need is all available.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Eldon
