I am totoly at a loss as to what would cause my JD 214 to quit running. It runs fine for 30 minutes or so and then the engine sounds as if it's under a load and quits. This engine is a Kohler 14hp, it does not use oil or smoke. It seems as if it is getting too hot, but that's just a guess. Also the oil dip stick will begin to back out as if there's too much crank case pressure. There is also a rattling sound in the engine but a friend had told me that this was the timming gears and not too worry. Could the engine have slipped time? Could there be a valve sticking? Is there a crank case vent that has gotten pugged up? I have only had this tractor for a few months and it has never done this before, but the guy I bought it from said it was doing this on him. I bought it for a song and a dance so I took a chance on it, when I brought it home and checked the oil it had way too much in it. I changed the oil and it has run good until now. Any help would be EXTREMELY helpful.

Re: JD316 mower deck bearings......How?? in reply to Mike, 05-25-2002 19:26:00
Remove the pulleys on the top, and remove the spindle housings fro mthe deck.

Set the housing in a press, and push the spindle shaft out of the housing. The flat part the balde bolts against will come out with that shaft. When that is out, look at the bottom of the housing, you'll find the snap ring you are looking for. remove that ring, and the bearing. The other bearing drvies right out through the top. The second snap ring is under the lower bearing. Put the new snap rings and new bearings back in, and press the shaft back in. Support the center of the new bearing, so as you press on the shaft, the housing can still be spun freely. a hollow piece of pipe works, so the shaft can go through as you press.

if its blowing out the dipstick,,you will probably need to remove engine and tear it down . you have a problem and need too overhaul it...get the kohler manual and follow it or take the engine to an automotive machine shop to have it measured and estimate price..... its not alot of work on the 214 to take the motor off but the tractor is well worth fixing if its in overal good shape.....don
