I was disappointed to hear a familiar chirping noise from the engine of my 1965 JD 110 (Kohler 181 S) after I lent it to a friend so he could mow his tall grass. I'd replaced the head gasket on two occassions relatively recently, the second time tightening the bolts with a torque wrench, and again in the correct order. Does anyone have any feedback on what could cause a head gasket to blow repeatedly? I believe the timing is properly set. I love this tractor and I hate it. This week it's heading towards the latter, though unlike recently when I counted on it weekly to mow an acre or so, now we've moved to a property in town and I don't need to fix it immediately. Still, I'd like to keep this running, and any advice would be appreciated. Also, how come no matter what I do mechanically to this thing, I always seem to end up needing a band-aid? And how come most hardware stores don't sell band-aids?

TRY CHECKING THE BLOCK AS WELL AS THE HEAD FOR FLATNESS AND TRUE BY USING A GOOD STRAIGHT EDGE IN ALL DITECTIONS LOOKING FOR LIGHT UNDER THE STRAIGHT EDGE AND IF YOU FIND SOME LIGHT LEAKING THRU THEN TRY TO MEASURE THE CLEARENCE BETWEEN THE STRAIGHT EDGE TO THE HEAD OR BLOCK TO SEE HOW MUCH THE SURFACE IS WARPED. IT THE SURFACE IS WARPED THEN YOU CAN USE A WHETSTONE THAT IS AT LEAST A FOOT LONG TO SURFACE BOTH SURFACES IN ORDER TO GET A GOOD SEAL, BUT DO NOT TAKE OFF TO MUCH IRON AS YOUR VALVES MIGHT HIT THE HEAD WHEN RUNNING.

if you are not retorquing the head after the engine has some run time on it (mow lawn & retorque head) you will blow the head gasket they realy loosen up after you get them warmed up good . on rechecks I've seen them as low as 20 ft.lbs.

warped head and or warped block,,,usually getting a new head or having it surface ground will cure the problem..you can surface it yourself useing a large peice of 80 grit paper on a flat surface,,once you start sanding,,you can see the high and low spots..also,,set the points with a timing light as per manual, the reason is,,its the only way to get it perfect,,,if the points rod is worn and you set them at .020,,you may be way off,,causing engine to run hot...also go backand retorque the head after 5-10 hours..... if the block is warped or has a bad spot from the gasket leaking,,it may be surfaced also(if not to deep)..ive cut blocks to the point thatthe piston is sticking out and i simply turn the piston top down in a lathe to its proper position, flush or slightly below the deck...having all the proper sheet metal an the engine is also essential for the heat to be carried away by the air flow..look at another engine or the manual to see the sheetmetal.also be sure fins are clean,,,i havent seen it on a kohler but a clogged muffler or a burned out muffler will make an engine run hot also..use the kohler gasket with the fire ring on it..some aftermarket gaskets dont have it..good luck and let us know what youfind...don

Hi Stephen,
Have you checked your head and block for warp?
Does the gasket blow the same all the time?

Scott
