A friend of mine has a Case 444 that he would like to get rid of. I am not sure of the year but it seems to be in pretty nice shape. It has a belly mower and for winter, a front-mounted snow blower. I've heard that these were a pretty good quality yard tractor, does that sound correct? And how might I find parts availability? Are parts expensive (everything is I guess)? And, are they a reliable unit? Lastly, would you know of a "ballpark" $$$ value figure to start the price-negotiating with? Anything you might know about them is appreciated.

The 444 is a good tractor and very solid. Pats are expensive as all lawn tractors. My dad had the 444 and never liked it because of the single cylinder engine shaking and vibrating so much. But I have the 448 and its a great tractor with the 2 cylinder engine. Mine cost $2300 with 400hrs, 60" mower and snow blower. I saw a 446 in the paper a month ago for $1200 that had the same attachments with only 200hrs, but that didn't last long. I would guess its worth $1000 - 1800 depending on the hours on it. You can always put a different engine on the tractor.

The Case 444 is a very good tractor. Ingersoll Equipment bought the line in the mid-80's and still builds a tractor almost identical to the 444. As such, all parts are available through them (but expensive). As for price... that is difficult to answer since it depends on a lot of factors. As with all used garden equipment--- you should be comfortable with repairs and troubleshooting. The 444 is all hydraulic and requires some learning (for most of us) prior to repairing.
