anyone out there have tractor tread or bar tread or knobby tread tires on the rear axle of their garden tractor??

i know it's more expensive as compared to chains. i also realize that either will require wheel weights.

aside from that, how does this setup work traction-wise for dirt work, snow plowing, etc???

is it worth the expense??

tx

Agricultural style bar tread tires, compared to turf tires, are:

1. a bit rougher on a soft lawn,
2. far superior in the garden,
3. generally better in the snow, and
4. just as useless on ice.

If you're needing more traction only for plowing snow, go with chains over your stock tires.

If you'll be gardening or pulling, ag tread tires are well worth their cost. Based on my totally un-scientific observations while both gardening and pulling, it appears Firestone's 23 degree tread bars are better in clay, while GoodYear's and Carlisle's 45 degree tread bars are better in loose sand. Maybe others will offer their opinions on this as well.

pete, don, thanks for the responses.

this was my guess also. i live out in the middle of 35 acres of pasture with little worry re what the tires may/may not do to the "lawn".

think eventually i will go this way.

thanks again for the 1st hand info.

Randy, I have to agree with Don! I presume that it somewhat depends on your tractor, f/r weight ratio etc.: but having used both ( I have a Ford GT85)now called New Holland, there is a definite advantage, especially with ground engaging tools. keep em' running.... Pete
