Cub Cadet 122 questions

Hi, this looks like a great resource, and I'm hoping someone can answer some of my questions. I have been offered a cub cadet 122 by a friend at work for $500. It has a snowblower but is missing the mower deck. It is in great shape, he has sandblasted/painted everything and it runs very well except for the clutch which seems to stick a bit. It is also missing the grill. I am mostly interested in it for snow removal, but I hope to get a mower deck for the spring.

-Are mower decks for these hard to find, and what can I expect to pay for one? I don't mind doing a little modification to make something fit. -Is a sticking clutch likely just a matter of adjustment, or is it more serious than that? -I realize that prices vary a lot, but does $500 sound like a reasonable ballpark figure for this?

Got my first gear drive cc122 with creeper this summer. Paid $250 for it plus 50 to have it delivered to my door with a blown engine. Had a shortblock so it was ok. It also came with a front blade - no mowing deck.

My son did wonderful in the tractor pull with it pulled 1150# but it needs more weight. I got up to 1300# (see what beer and potato chips do).

Love the gear for the garden but the wide ag tires are not so good for plowing snow. The wide tires build up snow under the tires (seem to be wider than the plow). Cant get a clean plow. Narrow tires are a definate must.

My cc123 with 6" rear ag tires, narrow front tri-rib tires and front end loader is great in the snow - like a little buldozer espically with chanis and weights. The Hydro with the quick F-R action speeds up the process.

Hi Sammy! I posted that at 12:07 PST, it was only a little after 2 PM here in Huskerland. Hadn't started on the exercise program yet (12oz. curls).

Although hard to appraise a tractor "sight-unseen", and also what YOUR perceived value is, I would say that a 122 (12hp, gear drive) with a working, functional snowblower is a good value at that price.

Does this tractor have any other options? i.e. hydraulic lift, rear 3pt lift, headlights, or creeper gear? These options add to and can rapidly escalate the value of the tractor. The snowblower could be worth as much as $250 by itself. A deck can usually be found for around $100. Gadget

Thanks for the info. The tractor does not have any of the options you listed, but I am not overly concerned with getting the best deal. I just wanted to make sure the price was reasonable, and it sounds like it is fair from what you said.

if it does not have a creeper you'll find the blower to be useless , if it's a CW36 blower they are only worth about $100 , with no deck in the midwest it's a $300 tractor at best , all depends on where you live

I believe the blower is a QA42. I didn't realize the lack of a creeper gear would be a problem - my driveway is flat, so I guess I'll have to put the chains on and hope for the best. Are Cub Cadets generally easier to come by in the midwest? I'm in central NY State. It sounds like I might be overpaying a little, but I'd rather not lose the goodwill of my co-worker haggling over the thing.

you will find you will not be able to go slow enough to blow snow ,1st gear is way to fast ,you'll find yourself slipping the clutch alot & still will not be able to get the job done . the more snow & the wetter it is the worse it gets . how flat your driveway is dosent matter . it would be ok with a blade but not a blower , get yourself a walk behind before you get this combo

Creeper gear is a coveted option, and greatly adds to the value of your tractor. You should TWO shifters, right? The normal 3spd+Reverse and a short stubby labeld Hi-Low for the creeper. Gadget

1.) It's worth the $500. The snowthrower would bring $125-250, depending on condition. The creeper, $100-$175, depending on buyer's desire level. You can see that at the highest prices, you've got $425 in those parts right there.

2.) Haggle for it. Guys always set the price a little high expecting someone to haggle. If yer not a haggler, then just ask him, "What's yer bottom dollar price?" If you have $425 above, and he says he'll take $400, that's cool. And he won't hate ya for asking, either.

3.) The "sweet states" for Cub Cadets: Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio. The Northeast (yer neck of the woods) has its share, but not as many as those Midwest states. In the South, they are much rarer to find. I had a CC 122 with creeper, lights and deck in nice shape given to me in Illinois 2 months ago.

Braman - Pay attention to what Don just said, he has been involved with Cub Cadets ALOT longer than I have, and is MUCH more knowledgable.

My snowblower is on a hydrostat, so the concept of trying to blow snow with a gear drive is foriegn to me, didn't realize that a creeper would be in order there. Gadget
