Depending how you plan on using it and how much you plan on spending really determines the value for you. If this unit is a 1978, it should have the oil reservoir above the cooler in front. One of the downfalls for these units is that a log splitter can't be used. For this reason I like the later models for that Case log splitter is one heck of a unit for there is no cycle time since it splits both directions and some were available that would sit on the ground allowing the log to be rolled up about 10 inches and then its splitten time. If your not interested in the splitter, you'd never notice a difference between the units. Another point is to go with a good quality belt that is reinforced for you'd be lucky if you got three months use out of them otherwise. The Case/Ingersoll belts should last three seasons easy for that's what I average with my 48" deck. If you decide to buy it, take the transmission off, remove the top cover and check the differential bolts. If the unit used the Blade much, these grade 8 bolts have a tendency to break and end up going through the transmission case. I don't mean to confuse or discourage you from one of these units for I really like the two I got and would recommend them in a minute, but I think a person has the right to know what may go wrong with them in time. Believe it or not, the two I've got are 1981 and 1985 model year 446's and they're still on the original set of points, and I've only changed the plugs once in each of them. Good luck on your decision.

If it has 16" rear wheels it is probably a 446. If the rear wheels ar 12" a 226. Check the link for photos of each.

Sounds like the 446. The 448 had a 18hp onan. They are now Ingersoll and all the parts are still availible through them. Would you like to sell the three point hitch? I have the 448. The model # and SN on mine are located below the steering wheel and to the right of the brake release lever.

Sounds like it is a 446 or 448 with 16hp Onan. I presently work on a 444 and it has a 14 hp Kohler
