I repowered my CASE 446 this summer with a new 18hp ONAN. Used it the rest of the season with no problems..... ..However I went to start it to push snow and It will not start. I charged the battery and cleaned all of the cable connections to no avail. I even tried to jump start it with my truck....no luck! It tries to turn over but doesn't seem to have enough umph or it has to much drag on it. The engine is connected to the hydraulic pump.

Any Ideas????

If the tractor has a PTO valve make sure it is in neutral. If there are quick couplers on the valve make sure they are connected good. The hydraulic oil in this tractor should be 20W40 motor oil. 15W40 or 20W50 will work. I am assuming you installed a new starter with the engine. The ONAN starters will sometimes draw moisture and corrode causing them to drag.

Your note is interesting in that I am ready to put a new Onan 18HP in my 448. Having been around construciton equipment it seems as if the starter does not have enough power to turn the pump in cold weather. Can you tell me how difficult and or expensive it was to swap out the motors. The cost for a motor is about 1300 + the muffler pipe piece. Is this accurate? Everyone I have talked to has tried to talk me out of rebuilding! I bought tractor used at a very good price. PS, have you tried moving tractor to warmer spot? Is the hydraulic oil right weight? Good luck.

I have a 444 Case that I bought with bad motor. It had a Kohler, but I put an overhauled Briggs Vanguard ohv 18hp v-twin that I picked up for $400. Took some modifications to mount the hydraulic pump and pto clutch, but overall wasn't to bad to swap.

I too am installing an 18 H.P. Onan in a 446.
Salty dogs! I was quoted $1300.
I bought a Model #P218G-I/10936H, exhaust tube kit #541-0405, and exhaust flange kit #541-0370.
The tractor is in many parts in my garage without time to put it back together yet. I have been down many roads with this project, including the rebuild game. I was quoted an open ended $850 for rebuild. I bought old manuals with tech tips that address an oil burn issue with the old BF style 16 H.P. Onan. Not sure about the 18. The old engine did not have an oil filter and had stripped carb and exhaust threads. Go new.
Good Luck and please keep us posted.

Hydrostatic transmission tractors are a bear to start in cold unless there's some way of disconnecting the pump when cold. My old MF 12 uses a belt drive which is tightened by an idler that releases when you hold a pedal down. This also prevents runaway starts. I think my bro'-in-law has a Case 446. Originally had 14hp Kohler, right? His barely turns over in the summertime, but the ol' Kohler pops right off. Don't know what to say but keep 'er warm. Magnetic engine heaters work well. Try one on the hydro pump, too.
