If I run this motor on the points and battery it runs like it has a hot cam. Adjusting the carb does very little. If I run on electronic ignition it runs O.K. Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong here. It's on a Wheelhorse and is a strong motor when I can get it to run. The adjusting screws for the electronic ignition are about to shoot craps so I would like to run it on battery if I could.

If this engine has external points check for corosion between the points and the engine block. I had some corosion that you can't see until you remove the whole assembly. After a good cleaning mine ran fine again. Good luck.

If adjusting the carb mix has no effect. That is usually a sign of air leak. Spray some carb cleaner or ether around the carb/intake manifold etc. If the engine changes noticable, then air leak.

I don't think it's an air leak. It runs O.K. on the electronic ignition. I've also ground the valves and put in a new guide.

My guess is the coil. I worked on a kohler several years ago that ran poorly. The book said to use only a kohler coil. The book was right. Automotive coils would not work.

Thanks everybody. I think Larry might have it. I should have told you all these parts are new and I did put an automotive coil on it. This is on a pulling tractor so you know it is imperative that I get it fixed. Do you know what the difference is in these coils?

I have a cast Iron Briggs on an old Gilson, it runs well on a car coil but the points are very critical. clean an adjust carefully.
