we have a 107 hydro that has a Drive/release lever on it. we got the motor running and I hoped up on and put it in reverse. nothing. foreward, nothing. not even a whine (my 1250 will whine) like all hydros I've driven do. we filled rearend full of hy-tran and tried again. still nothing. is the release my problem? were these troublesome? I wonder, as my 1250 dose not have a release. BTY we found a piece of broken spring steel in the bottom of the fan housing. Is that from release? thanks a million.

I just ran across your post by accident but thought maybe I can help. I had the same problem with my 149 when I first bought it. both the release spools stuck in the in position when I
lifted my release lever. I don't know where yours
is located but mine is on the side of the cover in front of the seat. I removed it and saw the little buttons were stuck down. I cleaned all the
dirt and stuff away from them and soaked them with wd-40. I let it soak for awhile and after
playing with them for awhile (gently) with an o-ring pick one of them freed up. I started the tractor and then had reverse but no forward. I then got a socket and ratchet that fit and removed the still stuck one. making sure that there was no dirt around it to fall in the hole.
I had to use the o-ring pick to go through the
holes in the sides to work the spool free. again
gently while applying wd-40. I reinstalled the valve and it works perfect. lack of use makes these things stick. it's a good practice to lift
the lever every once and awhile before starting your tractor just to keep them working for whenever you need to use it. email me and let me know if this helped.

Re: Do You Guys Always Mow at Full Throttle in reply to Dan, 05-28-2002 13:12:15
If dust in your yard is a concern, maybe you should consider planting more grass to get a better stand, thus decreasing or eliminating the dust. I always mow with the throttle wide open. I was also concerned about doing that until I discovered that the "wide open" throttle position on the dashboard only opened the carburetor butterfly about halfway open! Under heavier load, the governor opens the carb more to keep engine speed constant. Also to be considered is the governmental regulation about maximum tip speed on lawnmower blades being 19,000 feet per minute. This blade speed is supposedly adequate for lifting and cutting the grass, but will lessen the chance of projectiles being tossed thru your neighbor or his windows! And with the goofy little plastic deflector which helps windrow the grass, and causes the wife to then want the yard raked, you are allegedly safer than before such devices were mandated. All the best.....Greg

sounds like 1 of your release valves on the hydro are stuck down . you'll have to take the fender assy. off to get at them
