I had a 110 that i had totally gone through and the JD dealer here said it was worth every bit of $1500. Your 140 is bigger than mine was so don't give it away!!!!

Got one like that too - (except that I opted for a new engine - 18hp Briggs Vanguard V-Twin, when the old Kohler got tired,) I wouldn't part with it. Tractor is smaller than similar models today, thus more nimble. Beat up on the thing for thirty years, never had trouble with the hydrostatic transmission - Just change the filter and oil once in a while. We blow snow, mow and till with it, along with other yard/farm jobs, including mowing off 60 plus acres of hayland a couple of years. Origional tiller died a few years back, and couldn't get parts for it, so replaced it with one of the new hydraulic drive units -great working combination!

I saw that you dont use your old tiller any more. Would you be willing to part it out for some quick cash?

I ran across a posting you had about changing your Kohler for a Briggs on a 140 Deere. I'm thinking about doing something like that. How much modification did it take? Thanks
John

I recently bought a 140 because it had a tiller. The tiller seems to be put together wrong, as we can't hook it up. The chain spockets do not line up. Interested in your new hydraulic tiller- what model is it

a couple of questions from a non-pro

1/ what does "h3" mean and why does it make a JD more desirable? 2/ why do many people want the old ones and not a new one?
3/ how long do JD hydroststs last? cost to repair?

Should be 1979 or earlier. I bought mine new in 1979 when they were phasing out this model.

1. Hn=number hydraulic "spools", i.e. H1=one pair (single) hydraulic couplers H3=3 pair (2 front + 1 rear) hydraulic couplers

2. Well built, easily maintained, large dealer network, availablity of parts and accessories, an old John Deere (or Cub Cadet) is a better investment than a new MTD (or most anything else, for that matter!)

3. Hydrostats, properly maintained, rarely, if ever need repairs. Don't know what it costs to repair one... never had the need to. Gadget
