I have read the other postings on the JD 317 and the series I Kohler engines. These tractors are about 20 years old now so should any of those that had the "bad" engine still be running? Does anyone know of where one of these 317 with this engine can be found? I would like to find one to play with (cheap of course). Thanks.

I have 2 of these YT tractors. A YT10 and a YT11. The YT10 I bought new in 1987 and its worked very hard for me all these years, blowing snow, mowing grass and pulling various tow implements. The YT11 I picked up in a yard sale just because I like them so much I couldn't resist it for the price. Both my tractors have gear drives but I'm sure the Hydro is even better. I wish one of mine was a hydro, but anyway these are the toughest little garden tractors I know of.

I bought a 317 for $5oo. No engine, then I bought a Magnum 18 from local Simplicity dealer for $600. Rebuilt of course ! Then the fun began. The 18 hp has 1 1/8 shaft ,the 17 hp had 1" shaft. Finally found a clutch that would work by going direct to Warner Electric in Rockton,Il. Then I bought a grounded ignition switch and re-wired it for tractor electrics. Clutch and switch run about $150. Had to modify rt.engine to clear oil filter. It was fun and I now have good running tractor.

How do you tell a series 1 fron a series 2?

Thanks Max.

I will look for Blue Silicone to seal the push rod tubes. I put the breather in backwards the first time, but figured that out within about 3 minutes.

I think I will pull the breather and retighten the bolts holding the assembly to the head. Since I didn't do rings, I'll probably let it get 10-15 hours on it before I change the oil.

Thanks for your helps and tips.

Steve

funny thing.. i was over at my neighbors the other day, and he was telling me he had this JD 317 and i didn't know that already, and he bought it new, and last year it had started smoking and stuff, so he had a guy rebuild the engine, and he tells me he can't get it to start now. i ask if i could take a peek at it and what do you know, it started right up for me. so this is after we've already gotten some snow, but i put the blade on for him anyhow, it is a hydro tractor with hydro lift and blade angle. he has a 4' mower, big tiller, and at least 4' blade. so he thanks me and i say no problem. anyway, yes my neighbor has one of those, but not for sale. he is elderly... but his runs good, so it wouldn't be good for tinkering anyhow.

There are 2 317's sitting at the JD dealer in Waverly, NE right now. Both have Series I engines in them. His asking price is $1200 for one and $1500 for the other (one is a little rougher than the other).

I own a 317, but mine has already been repowered with a Series II. Also available (but you have to change the ignition system) is a Kohler 18hp Magnum.

JD at one time offered a repower kit to install an 18hp Onan P220. I have heard that Padgett's has most of the necessary parts to effect this sort of transplant. Gadget

There are probably still a lot of these out there. If you consider that the engine failures came first among the places where the tractor was used to mow on a side hill, the flatlanders' tractors should have lasted a lot longer.

It would be interesting to figure out what kind of less-pricey but reasonable sized motors would fit in these.

I have one that the series 1 engine expired on last fall. Been looking at new series 2 engines. I bought another 317 at auction last fall to keep the yard mowed. The replacement engines are kinda pricey. I am debating engine replacement, selling the expired tractor, or just keep it for parts for the 2nd one I bought. I have a new starter, driveshaft and magnetic clutch in the old one, so it might be worth just hanging on to. I am not sure what one with a bad motor is worth. A new kohler KT17QS is running about $1250. Stillcrazy in Indy

I bought one of those and put it on a Wheel Horse puller. I think I paid $200 for it and used it for 9 or 10 years. Never put it on a hillside but it did put the Horse up on the rear wheels quite a few times. Had to sell it because the new club we started pulling with thought it had too much power. Think that was a polite way of saying they were tired of getting beat? Oh, we also cranked it way above 3600 and never had any trouble with it.
