I have a Sears Suburban 10XL tractor that I bought about 12 years ago from its original owner. It's in near perfect shape except for one thing. Someone disconnected the starter solenoid and rectifier and wired the battery straight to the switch. It has worked fine in that fashion, but the battery does not get recharged. Instead, I periodically have to charge it up. My tractor has the original Tecumseh 10 HP solid cast iron engine. Anyone out there who can give my instructions for getting the wiring back into shape? In advance, thanks.

kent, give me a couple of days to research my books for you, i've worked in outdoor power equipment industry for 13 yrs., i've owned a few of those tractors and have only one left now. i'm no longer employed in that industry anymore but still have a fair knowledge of them. does that hh100 engine have just a plain starter motor or a starter generator. i suspect it has a belt driven starter gen. let me know, in the meantime i'll look it up and try to put in plain english for you maybe a wiring diagram or two.

Thanks for your offer, it's much appreciated. My engine has the integrated starter bolted onto the engine and some sort of alternator circuit built into the engine. I have seen some of these tractors with the belt-driven starter/alternator, but my engine is not that style.

sorry i didn't get back to you yet, been working lots of overtime, and babysitting. i'm writing a detailed layout of the 2 charging systems that your engine could be using it is either a 10amp or 20amp and i wonder if you could tell me if the reg/rec is mounted in the blower housing of the engine or wether you have an aluminum finned box mounted to the frame under the dash area. if you can get me a fax# ican fax you some general wiring schematics for those 2 systems. if you are close to a lawn and garden repair shop go in ask to order a tecumseh engine repair manual for 8-18 horsepower engines part# 691462A that will cover your cast iron engine. the model # of your engine is HH100 you will find that stamped into the blower housing either on top by the plug or usually on a tag on the carb side and it will have your spec # and the date code. also ask for eletric trouble shooting book part#693505A the both of these books should not cost more than12-15 dollars hope we can get ya wired up correctly

I would suggest trying to find a book on small engines. Most libraries should carry these books. The diagram in the book should be what you need.
Also you might want to check out the solenoid and rectifier to see if they are in good shape. Maybe if all else fails, contact the old owner and ask him if he remembers why it was bypassed.
