Cub Cadet 104 question?

I have got a cub cadet 104. The engine in it is no good, but I have come across a 12 that I think should fit. My question is, will it? The holes for all the bolts line up and everything seems as if it should fit the same, I was just wondering if anybody had done this and if they had any problems. The engine is complete with carb and air cleaner, and was supposed to have run 2 years ago, and the guy wants $50 for it. Is that a good price? Oh, and one last question, what year(s) was the 104 made? Thanks

the 2 motors should work the only problem may be the exhaust i have done this and some fit fine some do not do your self a big favor if the other motor has been sitting do a valve job and install new rings and gaskets this will save you alot of problems later on it is better to do this while the motor is out 104 is a late 60"s model chris!

as long as the oil pan is the right one (bolt hole's won't line up if it's the wrong one) you have a 1 inch out put on the crank some other brands used 1 1/8" and the clutch end is right you should have no problems if it's complete and runs i would get it even if it didn't fit. $50 is a good price for a complete engine Kohler gets $800 for a short block. Kohler dosen't make any new blocks for the K-series.
the 104 was bulit from 11/67-8/69

Thanks for the info. I went ahead and called the guy and said I would come pick it up tomorrow. I think it will fit, if not, I am sure I can find someone who can use it. He says it is supposed to run, but I don't know, it's not locked up or anything, so it shouldn't take too much to get it to run-I Hope.....

Will just throw this in for information and a possible laugh. When I bought my first house I could have used a riding mower but the budget said I had to use whatever I could find. Anyway one day I look across the street and the neighbor has his riding mower standing completly upright with front up in air and rear on the garage floor with all the underneath showing. I go to check this out and find that he had tied the front to the bottom of the garage door and used the electric opener to pull it up. He was changing belts and sharpening the blades. I have never had enough guts to try this trick. I can just see the entire door falling down.
