My Craftsman model # 143.930-009 peerless transaxle was VERY difficult to shift. I pulled the plug and added about 1/2 quart of 90wt gear oil. Now the tranmission is easy to move through the shift points but there is no drive through the axles. It's a great driven manual transaxle? Did I screw-up by putting oil in the transaxle?

PROBABLY DIDNT HURT IT ANY WORSE, THAT TRANY HAD A SORT OF SOLID GREASE IN IT! MAKE SURE THE BELT DIDNT COME OFF!IF IT DIDN'T THEN TRANY NEEDS TO BE TORE DOWN A NEW ONE RUNS ABOUT $450. USED $75-200.

Bill No harm was done but the trans will probably leak. you may need to tear it down to find out why it wont drive (is the belt still in place?) Mechanics handbook TECUMSEH PEERLESS MOTION DRIVE SYSTEMS covers all of these drives. It should be available at the local Tecumseh dealer. The correct grease is sold as "BENTONITE GREASE". Does any reader know it by another name? Hope this is helpful Keith

There are usually a few of these drive system manuals on e-bay at any one time, although some of them are starting at more than a new one at the dealer (and still attract bidders!), but others go pretty cheap. I have only heard the grease referred to as Bentonite as well, Keith.

Searched the internet using Google, searched for "what is BENTONITE GREASE".

First Link I found is for www.tsmoly.com
