I have a Bush Hog D4-10 garden tractor with a Delco starter generator and voltage regulator. It will start the engine fine, but it will only charge for a couple of minutes and then go into discharge. I have cleaned all of my connections and cleaned the armature and changed the brushes. I don't know much about the operating theory but it seems to me if it is starting and charging for a couple of minutes then the charger is ok, would the problem be in the regulator?

There are two seperate windings inside a starter generator. The starter windings are heavy gage and seldom have any problems. The other winding is for charging. It is a much finer wire gage and is usally the one that fails. Replacing this winding required removal of the steel core. Removal of those flat head screws usally takes a special fixture. A good starter/generator shop would be able to test both the generator and regulator together and determine what the problem is. Good luck. Venda2

Al Eden has been posting technical aticles for L&G tractor electrical systems at the www.simpletractors.com website. The article deals specifically with the Delco starter-generator operation and troubleshooting.
