I am going to an auction in two days, so any quick answers will be helpful. The auction is by a multi-location Deere dealership, and there are 50 or more used JD garden tractors, along with a few other brand GTs. I looked them over closely today. I want at least a 48" deck, with 54" or even 60" being a plus. Here are the models I am considering, along with a typical hours reading. Except for some torn seats they are all in very nice shape. Please let me know what you consider to be a good price for these examples. Keep in mind it is an auction and all eqpt is "as is". I have started up the ones that most interested me. I am not interested in pushing snow or using other attachments for this purchase. Just mowing. These are typical:

-1998 345 48" 700 Hrs. -same with 54" -1994 425 60" AWS 600 hrs. -same with 54" -1999 425 60" AWS 450 hrs. -1996 LX188 48" 300 hrs. -1995 LX178 48" 300 hrs. -almost new Sabre 2554 -mid 80's 420 60" 700 hrs -318 50" 900 hrs.

And a wildcard, nice condition, at least several years old but orange plastic hood: Simplicity Landlord, 18HP Briggs Vanguard twin, 50" 280 hrs.

Any price checks that you can give me right away will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Don M

I have been to that auction many times. I haven't stopped in to look at this auctions stuff yet, but I think that these kinds of tractors sell for wholesale or whichever private buyer REALLY wants it then it can sell for much more than it is worth. I think the machines that you are interested in will sell in the 2-3K range. You should start and drive any that you are interested in and then watch to see how easily it is started before they drive it in. They run for at least half an hour before they get sold so listen carefully after it is warmed up. Ted will stand behind what ever is represented at the time of auction and is a straight up guy to deal with. I bought a 316 two years ago for $1900 and it has run flawlessly. I have also bought other equipment there and been satisified. You would get a better price if you wait until October or November for the dealer sale.

Hi Don, I've been looking for a JD 318. Could you tell me where this auction is being held? Maybe you could let us know afterwards what these tractors bring. I would be interested in knowing how much the 318 sells for. Thanks.

Re: Roto-Hoe front weights in reply to Barrington, 04-06-2002 08:07:50
When I got my Roto-Hoe many years ago I read about optional weights being available, but I never saw any. I really didn't see a need for them, but I suppose a balance weight in the front would make the rear tiller easier to lift. It would not be hard to hang some iron on the front, to see how you like it. If the weight helps, brackets could be made to hook onto the frame just like the tiller attachment mounts on the back. I have a snow thrower attachment that mounts that way.

Be real careful of oil level in the engine. I blew my original engine tilling very deep and putting the unit on quite an angle. Apparently the oil level was a little low and the rod blew. A costly mistake. I upgraded to a 10 horse engine and also enlarged the engine pulley. It does not wear out a belt in an afternoon now due to slippage and turns the tines faster. Nothing has broken, but shin guards made out of PVC sewer pipe are a must! It really fires the rocks out of there. Good luck and have fun.

I tried to put a link to the auction listing in, but it didn't show. Here is the address:
