Does a case 444 have a relief valve on the hydralic system? The reason why I'm asking is that I was hooking up my tiller, and when I unhooked the hose on the back of the tractor it seemed like it biult up pressure and broke the pump.

I believe the tiller hydraulic motor and valve are in series, before the main hydraulic valve with relief valve built in. Normal procedure is to unhook the tiller with the tractor shut off, and then connect the lines to each other on the tractor, allowing the unimpeded flow of oil from the pump, through the tiller valve, through the connected hoses, and back to the main valve on the tractor, which contains a relief valve. Hope this helps!!

The PTO valve does have a relief valve that is normally set at 2500 PSI, 1750 PSI when using the log splitter. Only problem is that the relief is after the tiller, therefore yes the hose needs to be connected for the relief to work. The lower pressure setting also affects the travel ciruit which is set at 2250 PSI but doen't affect the lift circuit which is set at 750 PSI. This is why its best to have a flow meter to check the pressure setting on the PTO valve. Hopefully I didn't confuse you.

My 444 owner's manual says that if you open the PTO valve with the engine running, and without the hose connected across the PTO valve ports, it will damage the pump.
