Gentleman, I am new to this forum, but I find it interesting and informative. I am looking to buy a mid grade lawn tractor to cut about 3 acres of less than smooth lawn. I had a bad experience with a Scotts unit last year. Without going into detail, I was dissapointed with an major breakdown the first day I used it. I took it back to H. D. H.D. was very friendly and cooperative and offered me another unit or a refund. I opted for the refund. I have an old 30" 8 HP snapper but it takes a long time to finish the job. Any suggestions on a good mid grade 42" lawn tractor would be appreciated. Thanks, Rick(Ga)

I have a little trouble with the whole concept of mid-grade.

There's John Deere, Simplicity, Cub Cadet, and Wheel Horse (maybe others) on top, and American Yard Products (AYP, formerly Roper) and Murray (MTD) on the bottom. Almost all the department store tractors are made by AYP or MTD. John Deere makes Sabre and some Scotts models, but they aren't too different from MTD/AYP.

Unless you are really serious about buying a new tractor for some reason, you'd probably do better buying a used "real" garden tractor. They hold up better and they are repairable. For a "less than smooth" yard you need more tractor. Also, consider a bigger deck if you don't want to spend so much time out there. Again, you need a better tractor.

Parts are pretty readily available for most of the major brands, and lots of places will sell you one that has been overhauled and repainted for less than a new department store tractor. Your old Snapper still runs, right?

you may want to look at a ztr mower,,id reccomend at least a 5 foot cut for 3 acres,,,they are faster and more comfy than most lawn garden tractors,,,i know ,i have a 214 deer52" and a 1650 44" cub that work fine ,but i prefer my woods 1855 mowinmachine w/5foot cut,,its much faster and more comfy,,,,, don
