I have a Case 224 Tractor with a Kohler 14 HP motor. It runs really good for a little while, then starts to bog down- Then POOF out goes my dipstick, then it runs good again! One time it shot it over 100 feet. I tried taking it out and putting on a breather, but it blows oil I would welcome any suggestions- Thanks

These engines have a reed valve system in their crankcase breather which is in the cover plate over the valve springs and tappets. I would suspect this has been plugged with debris, broken, or improperly assembled by someone who has set the valves, or taken the breather apart to clean it. The other possibility is a burned piston, or badly damaged rings, but check the breather first! You should consult a diagram for proper assembly if you are not familiar with the proper arrangement of parts. I have seen a lot of these improperly assembled, causing the problem you describe.

Yep, Bob hit the nail on the head. A correctly operating Kohler crankcase vent system actually has the crankcase in a vaccuum while running.

My general experience has been that symptoms like yours are caused by ring blowby, worn valves and guides, poor crankshaft seals, or a combination of all of them. Any of them means it is rebuild time. If you experienced blue smoke pouring out the valve cover or smoke through the exhaust before this incident, it is most likely you'll need a rebuild.

But Bob is absolutely correct that you should start at the valve cover as the simplest and easiest possible fix. If it's plugged, it'll make things easy. I just don't find very many that fix that easy with this symptom. But I always check it. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Thanks guys! I will check that breather first. The little tractor has never smoked, even a little bit, and has great power, so I hope this is the problem Once again Thank You
