Can I check rpm's with a car tach?

Hi,

I maintain my neighbors little JD 165 garden tractor. JD talks about a vibration tach in the manual for setting the carb up. The local dealer doesn't think much of the gadget. Is there some way to use a automotive test tach on the mower and if so, how would I hook it up?

Thanks,

Fred

The Vibra-Tach will give accurate readings within 50 rpm of an electronic tach. I highly recommned them, as do a number of professional small engine mechanics. They cost as little as $9 to as much as $20 and come reboxed in a variety of packaging. All are the same units, made in Germany. Tecumseh sells one in their box that seems to be one of the cheaper ones.

I dunno what your dealer is thinking about...these have been used satisfactorily in small engine shops worldwide for many years. Remarkably simple concept, rugged, accurate, cheap. What more do ya want?

I'm getting a job at a JD dealer so i'll try these out and let ya'll know how my experience is with them. They do work on any engine, right? Are they just for testing or can you mount it permanently on a tractor? Does it use any batteries and if so, the tractor one or a watch battery or AA batteries or what? Is it analog or digital? if you don't know all the answers, that's ok, i can see at the dealer that i'm getting a job at, and let you know. I have seen the small engine digital tach and hourmeter combo, the one that is sold in Northern tool and equipment and other places for about $30-$40, and was going to get one of those. It shows the rpms when it's running and the hour-meter when it's turned off. It runs offa watch battery, which is supposed to last about 3yrs or so. I was going to get one of them, but this vibra tach sounds interesting and cheap. but i'd still like an hourmeter... not terribly important, but nice for maintenance schedules. Let me know what you know about it. Thanks,
Eric

Wow, yours must not have been setup properly and someone must have stolen your operators manual before you got a chance to read it. The manual gives details on how to operate down a hill. Biggest problem I ever had with mine was the lack of weight which was remedied by adding water to the rear tires. I've never had problems with my ignition key getting hot either, just the hood over the muffler. The only thing special about the Onan is the flywheel for the front pto and a 1-1/8" output shaft for the hyd pump, the rear mounts are standard SAE bolt pattern.
