I'm putting 70 Datsun 1.6 truck engine on my 1984-448 case. I have the 4sp tranny and they have 9500 original miles on them. 1.Do I use rubber motor mounts or should I go solid. I have considered taking out the whole tower/steering collumn, seat, gas tank, and mounting the engine/transmission together to run the tractor backwards putting the 60" deck out back, er front that is. 2.I have some parts of my lawn are very uneven, does a 60" still do a decent job? I have a semi-retired friend who does machining work who can make just about anything for me. Anyone got any ideas? Boyd the wildman, Stillwater, Mn

You'll will have to widen the frame to get the power transmitted to the rear axle which I assume you'll be using the Datsun rear axle. If not, hookup a Lovejoy coupling between the Datsun motor and a new 15 gpm pump. Now you can add a flow directional valve and when selected, send a portion of the pump output flow to a hyd motor on the front deck. Set the front deck up with a new support frame using 4 caster wheel, preferably 10" pnuematic, allow the hitch to float when mowing and you shouldn't have any problem with the undulations in your yard. Wow, it really sounds like fun. Good luck and happy mowing.

No changes to the frame or rear end of tractor. I will run the factory pump off the accessory drive on the front of the engine to run the hydraulic drive and 3pt and lift. I was considering having my friend machine a kind of pulley to slip into the back of the transmission and run a belt down to the mower deck. Can you imagine having 4 speeds plus reverse for the mowing deck. If not for bearing speed limitations and centrifical force I could maybe suck gophers out of their holes,or blow snow off the driveway.

Wow, the ability to blow snow off the driveway, and without even leaving the comfort of the garage. Sorry, I could resist it. Sounds like fun, enjoy. I'm working on a small project that includes the tractor and mower using a Dana axle, sunstrand model 15 hydrostat unit and Honda 24 hp engine. When done, it should be able to mulch a path 88" wide using 5-blades where the wings are allowed to float over the undulations.
